A Look Back at 2023 at Vanilla Paradise Nevis

As we end 2023 at Vanilla Paradise in Nevis we are proud to share all that we have achieved in this very busy year for our organic vanilla farm on the island of Nevis.

We hope you enjoy this look-back at the highlights of our farming year!

From 600 wonderful Nevisian mountain vanilla orchid cuttings growing in my garden shadehouses at the beginning of the year, to the roars of the earth-digger clearing the land for the first shadehouse to now 3 vanilla shadehouses each of 500m2.

We installed 800 tree posts for our vanilla orchids to climb up and spread nearly 40,000 coconut husks with 240 big bags of mango leaves as mulch to nurture our vanilla plants. Each shadehouse has a misting irrigation system and we have put up an electric fence to discourage the vervet monkeys and donkeys from visiting.

All this has been achieved with the help of a great crew of people from the local community and beyond, not to mention many of our own family and friends who were roped into “working holidays” on the farm!

It’s difficult to mention all the farm team but each one has brought great knowledge, craftsmanship, hard work and good humour to make Vanilla Paradise Nevis a living and working farm in only 11 months. You can meet some of our colleagues in our previous blog articles here. We will introduce more team members and their valuable work next year.

We sincerely thank you for following our adventure this year and we look forward to sharing our progress with you next year. We are especially looking forward to seeing the little and discrete vanilla lime green and yellow orchid flowers in spring time. Our first flowering!

We raise a glass of Nevis’ famous “Killer Bee” punch – with vanilla, of course, and wish you and your families a very Happy New Year!
